Q. Dear Coach:

I have a difficult time staying focused on my work. I am fine when working face to face with a client, but when I get back to my office, I am all over the place - jumping from one task to the next. I get work done, but it gets done slowly and inefficiently. Any suggestions?

Signed,

Very distracted

A. Dear "Very distracted":

You are not alone when it comes to being distracted. We all have lots of things to do and sometimes we don’t know where to start. In addition, there are many distractions that keep us from doing the really important stuff that needs to get done.

Here are some ideas to help you stay focused on your most important work, while managing potential distractions.

  1. Be clear on your priorities. Know what is most important to accomplish each day.
  2. Write down the three most important things you want to accomplish today. Keep this list in front of you. This is your “Priority to do List”.
  3. Set aside an appropriate amount of time, in your schedule, to work on your projects. Write the project name directly in your schedule. Treat the time you schedule for doing projects, the same as if you were spending it with an important client.
  4. Completely clear off your desk of everything except what you want to work on.
  5. Close your e-mail program! Don’t open it until your project work is complete!
  6. Forward your phone to voice mail and turn the ringer off.
  7. If there are others in your office, put a sign on your door or cube indicating that you do not want to be interrupted. If your office is a source of distractions, go somewhere quiet (i.e. Library, Conference Room)
  8. Let others know (i.e. administrative assistants, colleagues, spouse) when you are going to spend uninterrupted time so that they can help intercept and handle potential interruptions.

When you manage your priorities and manage your distractions, you are setting yourself up to be more productive and successful!
